Prinivil (lisinopril) is a hypertension treatment also used to treat heart failure, reduce complications following a heart attack, and to inhibit eye and kidney damage in patients with diabetes. Prinivil can be used in patients as young as 6 years old, though younger patients will require modified dosing.

Prinivil for Heart Failure

Patients regularly buy Prinivil to treat heart failure when there is an inadequate response to diuretics and digitalis. The initial dose when used with diuretics or digitalis is 5 mg, taken once per day. For those with hyponatremia, the starter dose is 2.5 mg, again once per day.

Once it has been established that patient tolerates the medication well and is not suffering low blood pressure, daily dosage may be gradually increased, up to 40 mg per day, typically taken just once per day. Use of the medication may continue for as long as it provides benefit.

Prinivil following a Heart Attack

Patients take Prinivil following a heart attack; treatment in this respect nearly always starts within 24 hours of the myocardial infraction.

Patients should take:

• 5 mg within 24 hours of the heart attack.
• After 24 hours, take another 5 mg.
• After 48 hours, take 10 mg.
• Take 10 mg per day from then on.

In patients with a low systolic blood pressure, treatment should start with 2.5 mg during the first 3 days after the myocardial infarction. If hypotension occurs, consider doses of 2.5 or 5 mg. If prolonged hypotension occurs, discontinue Prinivil.

Continue to buy Prinivil until instructed otherwise by a doctor. Patients typically spend at a minimum 6 weeks on this medication, often much longer.

Prinivil for hypertension

In hypertension Prinivil may be used in patients age 6 and up, though a doctor will need to determine daily dosage for patients under age 16.

For everyone else, treatment is quite similar:

• Initial adult dose is 10 mg daily.
• Dosage may be increased after several days of use to 20 or 40 mg, as needed, sufficient for the majority of patients.
• Though unusual, some patients may need dosage increased to 80 mg per day. Do not exceed 80 mg per day.
• In all cases, doses are typically taken just once per day.

Diuretics may be added if blood pressure is not adequately controlled by Prinivil alone; this is normally done before increasing dosage over 40 mg.

If a diuretic is already being taken prior to starting Prinivil, dosage of Prinivil will likely be cut in half---starting dosage of 5 mg.

Prinivil may be taken for as long as it provides benefit.
